“We’re not always like that, I swear.”
I first heard Hinds back when they were called Deers on the recommendation of a friend 😉. I had a feeling I would be seeing more of them. After brief run ins at Burgerama in California and SXSW in Austin, they were kind enough to grant me an email interview.

Bamboo was your demo tape. The video has a jovial, sun-drenched daytime beers and cigarettes feel to it. What was the process of shooting the video?
As a very first video, as a very first introducing of ourselves, as the first thing people were going to see about us, we had no doubt about shooting in places we go doing things that we do, haha.
So, we asked a friend who had a good camera to record us during a day in Madrid and Carlotta was the one who was going to edit it! So, the day after that we were going to Primavera Sound (Barcelona) and Carlotta realized that she didn’t have enough material to do a good music video so we started to record with our phones while we were in the festival, haha. Everything was quite easy in fact, doing a video without pressure, you know?
Hinds first US Tour// shots by Dylan Johnson
What inspired you to write the song?
Humm.. In fact it’s real that the lyrics of bamboo were written in only one evening that we, Carlotta and Ana, were specially upset with some boys stuff. We’re not always like that, I swear.
In the video you’re drinking in the street, which is obviously a lot of fun. Is it legal in Madrid?
No man… it’s a shame and it’s risky (its 600€ fine !!!) but we, and I mean all the young people, still do it.
Have you ever been arrested?
“No. Never. C’mon, we don’t look dangerous at all, haha.”
What was your relationship before the band got together?
Ana, Carlotta and Ade, we were best friends before, even when the band was only Carlotta and Ana. We thought that Ade should be our road manager or something. She didn’t’ even have a driver’s licence, haha. And it’s curious but we met Amber via catfish.
You recently got to play a show with a band you have listed as one of your influences. What was the experience like playing with the Black Lips?
SHIT it was one of the best trips of our lives!!!!!!! it was kind of weird when we met them ’cause they knew who we were and of course we know who are they, so it was like when you’re a kid and your father introduces you to another kid of the park you already know but you pretend you don’t?? Haha. it was so exciting, seriously; and we gave one of the best shows EVER. We had so much fun and the people of the crowd seemed like amazed. It was an incredible evening.
Okay, you’re on an island and you get one record, what is it?
Room on fire – The Strokes
So, you played SXSW and for your first US tour. What can you say about it?
We just couldn’t really imagine that… PLAYING IN THE US??? Must be kidding man, I try hard, but I still can’t believe it!
What advice would you give anyone trying to turn a creative outlet into a living?
Mmmmm, somebody told me once that creativity was an issue you can practice and you can improve. Like imagination, or memory. If you get used to work on it, you’ll get more creative everyday!
