This party had everything. Quintron and Miss Pussy Cat. Puppets. Mugato. The twins from The Shining. People throwing up from Bourbon Street cocktails. A woman dressed as Peaches. Actual Peaches. There is a hidden hotel in Brooklyn, built on candy. Master room at the Patch House in Brooklyn. The Patch House has had it’s door open to indie artists for around a year now. With secret locations in Brooklyn and Austin, they only house recording artists. There’s no concierge or room service in this unsuspecting brownstone, but tucked inside amongst a seemingly endless supply of Sour Patch Kids, are the most comfortable beds the artists who stay there have likely seen in a few weeks. There’s also a recording studio that’s been graced by the likes of Dr. Dog, Saint Motel, Robert DeLong and most recently, Mansions on the Moon. “A seemingly endless supply of Sour Patch Kids.” Typically reserved for independent artists out on the road, I stayed with LA based Mansions on the Moon as they made The Patch their home during their CMJ 2015 experience. They were…Continue Reading
On Saturday October 24th, Deep Cuts Records Store will host a post fire Silent Barn photo show/ BBQ. Photos featured here will be for sale. Time to day boogie. As you very well may know, DIY hub Silent Barn in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn suffered a fire. In an effort to better the situation a few people have put together a photography show to benefit the Silent Barn in…Continue Reading

I kind of hate indie blog rock. I actually do. I’m sure I’m wrong for my stance, but most of it comes off as uninspired hotel art trying desperately to be unique, while not rocking the boat or showing anything resembling emotion. Maybe not really an ideal stance for a music photographer. So, depending on how much whiskey I consume, CMJ can really feel like watching a trust fund kid’s art film. However, every year a few bands come off as inspired and infectious enough to arise from the midst of what I perceive as mediocrity and blow me away. Here are 8 of those bands from 2015. 1. Diet Cig at Palisades // Father/Daughter + Miscreant Records 2. Downtown Boys at Santos Party House // NME + Popgun Showcase 3. Ezra Furman at Baby’s All Right // Brooklyn Vegan Showcase 4. Dilly Dally at Santos Party House // NME…Continue Reading
